Tetsuhiko Asai was born on June 7, 1935, in Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku, one of Japan's four main islands.
At twelve he walked into a neighbourhood karate dojo and began training. At high school he took up judo as well, joining the school club and working his way up to second dan. Even as a boy he showed a clear gift for the martial arts, and training in the two disciplines side by side — judo's grappling together with karate's striking — laid the groundwork for the advanced karate he would go on to develop.
He then moved to Tokyo to study at Takushoku University, where he soon became a leading figure in the university karate club.
Lightly built and quick, he came up with attacks nobody else was using. The best known was his "submarine": slipping low beneath an opponent's kick and striking back before the opponent could regain balance. Moves like this brought him to the attention of the wider karate world.
