Kakuyoku Shodan is an Asai-Ryu kata performed here by a student of Asai's school, and it offers a valuable study in how Asai's forms are practised beyond his own demonstrations. Watch the characteristic Asai-Ryu elements: the soft, circular hand movements, the flexible stances, and the way the body turns with the technique rather than against it. The kata moves through its sections with a steady rhythm, and the transitions between directions are the places where the performer's balance is truly tested. Notice how the breathing supports the movement — the exhale lands with the technique, not before or after it. Recordings like this one show that Asai's kata live on as a taught and practised curriculum, not only as a master's personal performance.
